3-Mending Cities: New, Dense Neighborhoods in Former Industrial Areas

Established cities in Europe are experiencing spectacular new transformations to accommodate the need for housing and to repair disused industrial sites. In Manchester, Holt Town will bridge gaps between key growth areas, delivering 4,500 new homes in the process. The transformation of the former CLESA factory site in Madrid — together with the development of Oria Innovation Campus on adjacent plots — proposes the reconversion of a fragmented industrial area into a new dense, mixed-use, and connected urban system. And in Gdansk, the former Imperial Shipyard is being transformed into a vibrant new neighborhood, adding 3,500 residential units.
